Crowds waiting in intense heat for hours to see us.
A mission in Ghana contacted me shortly after graduating nursing school in 2004. My main responsibility would be assisting with the medical needs that arose in the local community. During my two year stay there, I had the opportunity to work in the local villages and hospitals, as well as helping out at the orphanage with the babies. The experiences and friendships gained during this time were invaluable. I learned and experienced a lot of things that wouldn’t have been possible in the states, due to limited licensure, etc.
After my return home, I never fully got Ghana out of my heart, and I knew that my work there was not done. For several years, I continued to visit, volunteer, and just spend time with the people who became like family to me. I held onto the hope that one day I would be able to take my own team of doctors and nurses back, so they also would be able to experience the beauty of Ghana and the people there.
After nine long years of waiting, and praying, God started bringing things together. I began reaching out to my friends and acquaintances in the medical field, asking who might be interested in going. One of them was Sheree Montoya NP, who also happened to be my primary healthcare provider. Walking into an appointment one day I ask if she might be interested in joining me. Without hesitation, she said, yes! Having her wisdom and professionalism going forward was huge, and I truly have so much to thank her for. The two of us took an exploratory trip in August of ‘23, and now are set to take our first team this upcoming spring.
I thank God first and foremost, for trusting me with the vision, and for all the wonderful people who would join me on this journey. Some dreams really do come true.
